Looking for Some Winter Reading

As winter is closing in I am longing for some good rose books to read when it is too cold to be outside working in the garden. Knowing that I have some very well read friends, I would like to ask for your suggestions.  What are the best rose books you have read recently?  I don't have a large number of rose books (you are looking at it in the picture) so most anything would be new to me.  Thanks so much.

  1. Oh good gracious......In Search of Old Roses by Thomas Christopher...would be the best I could recommend, but beware, it'll start a whole dangerous pasttime for you.

Others: Sustainable Rose Garden by Pat Shanley et al, The Organic Rose Garden by Liz Druitt, Hardy Roses by Osbourne and Powling come to the top of my head.

  2. Thanks prof, I'm ordering "In Search of Old Roses" now. "Sustainable Rose Garden" sounds interesting because I've been looking more at the use of public gardens which often get neglected. I would like to put a few roses in at the church and I want to make sure that whatever I put in there will thrive even if they are neglected sometime in the future.

  3. Rev, I forgot a couple you might like. One is Antique Roses for the South by William Welch. That one would fit your area, I think. Another, more of a relaxing read, is Otherwise Normal People by Aurelia Scott. The latter is about people who are into competitive rose shows; quite entertaining.

  5. Thanks again prof and no problemo greggo. I'm just glad you stop by and I always enjoy reading your blog. I don't know about "Otherwise Normal People." I showed dogs for many years (Siberian Huskies) and while I enjoyed many of the people who showed dogs (and I imagine that there are many similarities with rose show people) it always felt like I was walking into a world that was very foriegn to me.

  6. I enjoyed reading "The Organic Rose Garden", by Liz Druitt and learned a lot about organic rose gardening. One book that I am reading right now is "In Your Garden", by Vita Sackville-West. This book is not particular about roses, even though she is touching them, but I love her approach to gardening. After all she and her husband created the famous Sissinghurst Garden, so I guess she knew what she was doing ;-). Hope you find books that suit your fancy!
